“Do… do you even know how the brakes and steering wheel work?” Figaro asked nervously, buckling me and himself up. Pinra and Cornelius stepped onto the bus and settled somewhere in the back. As soon as her head touched the seat, Pinra fell asleep with a quiet snore while searching her dreams for the next great novel story. “She’s such a hard worker and dedicated author”, I thought to myself.
As I hit the gas pedal, the bus lurched forward, and we started to speed down the hill we were on. With a sharp right turn, the bus SQUEEEEEEKED and swerved on the rubber road as its wheels kicked up tons of soil! The bus tilted, bounced, and jolted as it accelerated on the springy rubbery road.
Due to my exquisite driving skills, we made it to the other side of the Hoomie Hills just right at when the sun started to set in the horizon. Figaro and Cornelius seemed pretty shaken and were thankful they did not lose any limbs. Pinra was still fast asleep despite all the tumbling and rolling. After Cornelius woke her up, we all got off and breathed the fresh night air. Cornelius and Pinra went on their way after wishing us a good night.
“What are brakes and steering wheel?” I asked Figaro after remembering him shouting out those items to me while I was driving.
“You did NOT once use the brake pedal.” Figaro scowled at me. “We could’ve smashed into something!”
Out of nowhere, the bus started slowly moving on its own behind us. Figaro and I tried to open its doors, but they were firmly locked.
“Are you seeing what I’m seeing Eden?” Figaro gasped, his face turning a pale ghostly white. “It’s moving on its own!”
“Yup, I’m definitely seeing what you’re seeing” I agreed. “Maybe we fixed it better than we thought?”
All by itself, the bus suddenly accelerated and started driving away from us as its headlights started radiating a strange orange light. At one point, it looked like the bus was about to crash into a sign, but avoided it by going around. We tried to catch up to it, but it went too fast for us, and we soon ran out of breath! Figaro told me he didn’t do anything weird to it. It’s still a mystery to us today as to what happened that day, and we never did see that bus again after it disappeared over a hillside.
